Job Title: Orthopedic Technician / Durable Medical Equipment Fitter (DME)
Reports To: DME and Ortho Tech Manager
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The Durable Medical Equipment Fitter is responsible for anything related to and concerning DME within University Orthopedics (UOI), including but not limited to fitting, refitting, custom measurement, education, billing, collection of co-ins/Deductible and patient satisfaction. The ideal candidate will order and follow up on DME orders. They will communicate with the patient care staff, patients and families regarding durable medical equipment issues. The individual will maintain the databases and files related to the durable medical equipment orders. The work in this position contributes to patient's overall successful interaction within the office. Exceptional people skills are needed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: - Provides direct patient care by fitting and instructing DME products to patients pre-operatively, post-operatively, or during a scheduled office visit.
- Educate patients on insurance plans and provisions, financial responsibility, and collection of patient portion.
- Assist staff and physicians in problem solving in regard to type of brace and fitting that best suit the patient and their situation.
- Reports any abnormalities in the forms to the DME Coordinator
- Responsible for recording the details in the patient's medical record as well as completing all of the necessary documentation in order for the billing department to submit the DME claim to the patient's insurance carrier.
- Interfaces with billing department on issues relating to DME bills, resolves identified problems in a timely manner.
- Adheres to all Federal and State regulations, agency policies and protocols relating to the DME functions.
- Additional duties as assigned by the Manager to meet department needs.
REQUIREMENTS: - Must be eligible for RI licensure as a PTA, OTA, ATC or have 1 year of orthopedic medical experience and/or DME experience.
- Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
- The ability to work quickly and accurately, and pay attention to detail
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the providers.
- Knowledge of Medical terminology, Insurance Claims, and Insurance Benefits.
- Knowledge of medical billing/collection practices
- Excellent skills in verbal and written communication and patient care
- Judgment, decision making, and time management skills
- Ability to organize multiple projects and assignments at once
- Must be able to travel to all sites if/when necessary.
