Description Summary Performs semi-skilled, skilled, and partial leadership work in connection with the public works departments and related public works infrastructure.
Distinguishing Career Features The Public Works Equipment Operator is a skilled level in a career path for maintenance and cleaning of City right-of-ways, alleys, storm drainage systems, other public property, and non-compliant private property. The Public Works Equipment Operator requires a minimum of three years of experience operating a range of equipment including backhoes, tractors, rollers, compactors, wheel loaders, grapple trucks and single and double-axle dump trucks. Public Works Equipment Operator requires the ability to train and observe safe work habits. Advancement to Heavy Equipment Operator requires applicable experience and/or certifications to operate heavy equipment.
Requirements The Street and Property Cleaning Equipment Operator is capable of leading and performing any of the following general and specialized functions:
- Operates equipment that support installation, maintenance and cleaning of city right-of-ways, alleys, storm drainage systems and other public property.
- Operates small-to-medium size construction equipment such as the high pressure sewer jet, vacuum truck, street sweeper, backhoe, water truck, wheel loader, grader, personnel lift, concrete/asphalt saws, chain saws, and related equipment.
- Operates and maintain Street Sweeper.
- Actively participates in and assists with setting up departmental on-call lists. Responds to urgent situations initiated by customers. Assists other Specialists in determining cause and location of service requests.
- Serves on-call evenings and weekends and responds to Public Works emergencies when called.
- Leads and participates in construction, cleaning and repair of storm drains, ditches, pipelines and catch basins.
- Operates specialized equipment, to inspect, clean, construct and maintain storm pipelines, ditches, catch basins, lateral lines and manholes.
- Participates in locating and marking sanitary sewer/storm main lines and laterals to elevate necessity of repair or placement.
- Digs and backfills trenches and holes. Breaks and repairs concrete and asphalt surfaces. Excavate and replace concrete and asphalt surfaces.
- Reviews work-in-progress for compliance with specifications and quality. Suggests modifications for quality purposes.
- Leads teams to trim brush and other obstructions around roadways including the retrieval of litter or other debris on medians, gutters, curbs, and related areas.
- Transports work teams by operating trucks, passenger vehicles or smaller automotive equipment including transport of tools, materials, and debris.
- Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
