Job Description

Nature of Work

Under close supervision, the Disease Intervention Specialist Trainee performs entry-level disease intervention services to support public health response to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including STD/HIV co-infections.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Investigate assigned cases by locating, interviewing, and re-interviewing index partners.
  • Identify and notify sexual and needle-sharing contacts of potential exposure to STDs/HIV.
  • Offer HIV testing and ensure appropriate treatment is administered.
  • Document case investigation outcomes and review patient records to verify proper STD treatment.
  • Recommend treatment modifications to providers when necessary.
  • Maintain regular communication with private providers, laboratories, and health departments.
  • Support enhanced testing practices, conduct case reporting, and gather diagnostic and treatment data.
  • Provide HIV rapid testing as part of routine outreach and case investigation.
  • Assist other jurisdictions during high morbidity or staff shortages, offering technical assistance and consultation to local health departments and providers to support regional performance standards.

Additional Expectations:

  • Participate in community planning activities, HIV/AIDS testing initiatives, and professional development conferences.
  • Attend at least one relevant conference and one training annually, and share insights with the Division of STD, HIV, Viral Hepatitis, and TB.
  • Travel within assigned areas is required; a valid driver’s license is necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

Substitution: Full-time or equivalent part-time paid professional experience in STD/HIV control, nursing, or social services and/or public health case management and investigation may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required training.

Special Requirement: A valid driver's license and the availability of an automobile is required.

Other Information

Full-time or equivalent part-time paid professional experience as an investigator in a Human Services/Behavioral Services may substitute for education or experience.
