Job Description

  • JOB SUMMARY
    • The Surgical Technologist First Assistant (STFA) or Surgical Assistant is responsible for rendering technical skilled care to patients during operative procedures under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse/ Surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations. The STFA aids in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient; prepares for surgical procedures; cleaning and turning over instruments, equipment and rooms for surgery; assists in evaluating the patient plan of care within the operating room environment, contributes to overall unit efficiency, safety, workflow and utilization; performing other related duties as assigned.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • Education: Graduation from an accredited school of Surgical Technology or graduation from an accredited school of Surgical Assisting
    • Experience: At least two (2) years of experience as a surgical technician.
    • Licensure/Certification/Registration: BLS Certification with a designation of either BLS Provider or Healthcare Provider from either the American Heart Association or American Red Cross, or Military Training Network. Certified Surgical Technician.

    • Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of surgical technologist work experience.
    • Licensure/Certification/Registration: CST (Certified Surgical Technologist).

    • Ability to work harmoniously with professional and technical staff and Physicians. To communicate verbally and listen to the needs of the patient, the Surgeon, and professional staff within the operating room. Ability to plan, organize and remain attentive throughout surgical procedures; ability to work with and learn to operate technical equipment; to work under stress/pressure; to maintain accurate records/reports; to participate in orientation of new personnel and teaching of students; to see, hear, stand, sit, walk, bend, and talk in English. Able to take call as required by patient care and staffing needs. Maintains confidentiality.
    • READING - Intermediate: Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
    • WRITING - Intermediate: Ability to write routine reports, correspondence, or procedures.
    • SPEAKING - Intermediate: Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one, small group situations or before groups of customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
    • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS - Basic Skills: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
    • REASONING ABILITY - Intermediate Skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
    • AGE SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES - Skilled at assessment and knowledgeable of growth and development. Provides appropriate care respective to the ages of the patients served per clinical environment.

    • WORK ENVIRONMENT
      • Typical Noise Level - Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic)
    • WORKING CONDITIONS
      • Occasional exposure to Laser Vision/Vision Screening. May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases. Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases. Exposed to hazardous anesthetic agents, body fluids and wastes. Exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment. Subject to burns and cuts; occasional exposure to unpleasant patient or unit elements; exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries and illness).
