Job Description

The Center for Global Development—an independent, non-partisan research organization— seeks a fu ll-time Research Analyst for its Education and Child Well-being program. This position is for a two-year fixed term, and will be based in either the London or Washington, DC office. Under the supervision of a senior fellow, the Research Analyst will perform a range of project research, data analysis, policy analysis, administrative support, and organizational duties related to the various workstreams of the program. These workstreams include—but are not limited to—foundational literacy and numeracy, mitigating the global burden of lead poisoning, and school meals in Malawi.

Research Analysts at CGD produce high-quality, practical research and analysis on a wide range of key development policy issues. Research Analysts conduct research, writing, and editing for research papers, working papers, policy briefs and blogs, and can rapidly produce high-quality briefing materials on one or more development policy topics. Research Analysts have a unique opportunity to influence policy by working alongside researchers and policy professionals in an atmosphere that requires initiative to tackle tough, unstructured problems.

The successful candidate will have strong quantitative skills and experience doing data cleaning, collation, and statistical analysis in Stata and/or other software packages. Strong analytical, writing, organizational and administrative skills will also be required, and the best candidates should demonstrate interest and research experience on policies and practices relating to international development. Research Analysts receive supervision, but a successful candidate will be able to work independently and take the lead on some initiatives. Experience with primary data collection in a low- or middle-income environment is a plus. Likewise, experience in and an interest in education and child well-being is a plus, but not a requirement.

Responsibilities:
  • Support a program of research and analysis in one or more key areas relevant to the Global Education and Child Well-being team through conducting research and data analysis. Develop suggestions for and co-author research papers and policy briefs and solo author blogs .
  • Support outreach and advocacy efforts to partner institutions, policymakers, and their staff.
  • Represent CGD through participation in conferences, private meetings, and other public events.
  • Build on a network of relevant policymakers and stakeholders and identify opportunities to strengthen research and analysis.
  • Organize events, including setting agendas, and preparing presentations and materials.
  • Work closely with the communications team to translate research into policy-focused products. 
  • Contribute to the drafting of communications and reports to funders and supporters.
  • Perform other duties as necessary in support of senior research staff.
The successful candidate will likely have the following qualifications and skills :
  • At least 4 years of experience conducting quantitative research with strong data analysis skills using Stata or R.
  • A master’s degree or a bachelor’s degree in economics, development, political science,  or a related field and significant relevant experience. A master’s degree may be substituted for some, but not all, experience. Relevant experience should be in political, economic, or public policy analysis related to international development.
  • Experience in co-authoring peer-reviewed publications and supporting the project management of complex research projects involving external partners.
  • Experience translating research into policy-focused propositions and products.   
  • Excellent written and spoken English;  proficiency in another language is a plus.   
  • Outstanding organization skills and attention to detail; proven ability to advance projects with hands-off supervision while being accountable for the accuracy of outputs.  
  • Ability to communicate effectively with senior officials and other VIPs.   
  • A demonstrable interest in international development and global education policy
  • A positive attitude and a great sense of humor.

UK Candidates: 
Salary is based on the level of experience and expertise of the chosen candidate.
Salary range: £46,725 - £51,187 per annum.

The organization is working hybrid with staff required to be in the office a minimum of three days per week. It is expected that the successful candidate will be within commutable distance of the office based in SW1.  

Candidates who wish to be based in the UK should have the right to live and work in the UK.

US Candidates:
Salary is based on the level of experience and expertise of the chosen candidate.
Salary range: $66,000 -$75,000  per annum.

The organization is working hybrid with all staff required to be in the office at least three days per week. CGD is registered to employ staff living in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Candidates must be able to declare a primary residence in one of these 3 locations.
