Job Description
PCB Layout Designer Location: Acton, MA
Employment Type: Full-Time
Overview: We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated, and energetic PCB Layout Engineer to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will be skilled in PCB design processes, particularly using Altium Designer, and will be comfortable working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent task agility, flexibility, and the ability to balance multiple responsibilities in a small company setting.
Key Responsibilities:
Collaborate effectively within a team and independently to design high-quality PCBs.
Apply solid electronics knowledge to PCB design, ensuring all designs meet necessary electrical requirements.
Manage the entire PCB design process using Altium Designer, including schematic creation, layout, board stackup configuration, and draft documentation.
Navigate and create complex design rules, addressing design rule checks (DRC), design for manufacturability (DFM), and design for excellence (DFX) to ensure high-quality designs.
Oversee component creation, library management, and work with PLM databases for effective data management.
Design PCBs with a focus on high-speed, analog/mixed signal, RF, and power systems, ensuring proper signal integrity, isolation, crosstalk, attenuation, EMI, and ground loops.
Adhere to IPC Class 2 and Class 3 standards to ensure reliable, long-lasting designs.
Act as the point person for resolving DFM/DFX issues, collaborating with PCB fabrication shops and contract manufacturers (CM) to meet cost and quality objectives.
Coordinate the sub-array through PCB fabrication and CM assembly to achieve the most efficient design-to-cost balance.
Manage complex tasks such as BGA break-out, dense digital routing, and tight component placement.
Utilize efficient layer designs, component-side, and thermal-side routing to optimize PCB layouts.
Implement shield walls and coordinate with mechanical enclosures to reduce interference and improve performance.
Commit to working full-time on-site, 40 hours per week.
Additional Responsibilities:
Take ownership of component libraries, creating new parts for yourself and the team as needed.
Establish and refine engineering processes, including integrations between Altium, Solidworks, and PLM systems.
Provide training and support to engineers and users on the design tools and processes.
Document PCB design packages and upload them to PLM systems for collaboration and sharing with suppliers.
Act as the main point of contact for layout coordination with external resources.
Operate and learn CAM tools for pre-DFM checks and other required design analysis.
Use stack-up tools to create material libraries based on supplier specifications.
Skills & Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience and proficiency with Altium Designer, including schematic design, layout, DFM/DFX, and complex design rule creation.
Strong knowledge of PCB design best practices, especially in high-speed, analog, mixed-signal, RF, and power systems.
Expertise in BGA break-out, dense digital routing, and tight component placement.
Understanding of signal path impairments such as isolation, cross-talk, attenuation, EMI, and ground loops.
Ability to understand and apply IPC Class 2 and Class 3 standards.
Solid experience managing and creating component libraries.
Strong skills in collaborating with fabrication and assembly teams to resolve design and manufacturing challenges.
Willingness to learn and adapt to new tools and systems, including CAM and stack-up tools.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a proactive attitude towards collaboration.
Desired Skills:
Experience with Solidworks and PLM systems for seamless integration with PCB design workflows.
Ability to create and maintain comprehensive documentation for PCB design packages and work with external suppliers.
Experience in training and mentoring engineers on design processes and tools.
Strong organizational skills to effectively manage multiple projects and deadlines.
Personal Attributes:
Personable, enthusiastic, and energetic.
Highly motivated with demonstrated task agility and flexibility.
Ability to work independently and within collaborative teams.
Positive attitude and a willingness to wear many hats in a fast-paced, small company environment.
