Job Summary

W e are seeking a dedicated and hardworking Greenhouse Assistant to join our team in a part-time contractor role. This position requires a minimum of 30 hours per week, with the potential for up to 40 hours. The Greenhouse Assistant will be responsible for various tasks related to plant care, greenhouse maintenance, and supporting research activities. Weekend work for plant watering is required, and the work schedule from Monday to Friday is flexible.

 

Job Description

• Plant a variety of crops, ornamentals, and perennials, following protocols for pot size, soil type, seed depth, etc.
• Perform routine plant care, including pruning, trimming, thinning, and transplanting.
• Water plants daily, especially during the summer (twice a day). Weekend watering duties (Saturday and Sunday) required for 2-4 hours each day.
• Sweep floors, power wash moldy areas, and maintain cleanliness by keeping debris off tables and floors.
• Squidge standing water and clean swamp cooling pads.
• Monitor and maintain fertilizer levels, re-filling as needed.
• Help transport plants to and from the spray room.
• Clean and sanitize spray room equipment (wash dishes, wipe down counters with alcohol wipes, change liners in the mixing hood).
• Dispose of trash properly, ensuring red trash bags are in place.
• Maintain cleanliness in the soil and plant prep area.
• Replenish planting trays, pots, and potting soil.
• Assist with soil sieving and pot filling as needed.
• Regularly clean and upkeep the greenhouse, growth chambers, and lab areas, including sweeping, power washing, and washing dishes.
• Support greenhouse researchers with various tasks as needed.
• Water, transplant, prune, and fertilize plants, including weekend watering.
• Assist with insecticide applications (approximately once a month).
• Assist with general tasks in the greenhouse, lab, and research areas as needed.
• Monday-Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (flexible hours based on workload).

 

Skills Required

• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekend watering (Saturday and Sunday required for 2-4 hours per day).
• Strong attention to detail, ability to follow directions, and a hardworking, self-motivated attitude.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in various environmental conditions (hot, humid, cool, or damp).
• Excellen t communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Must possess or be willing to obtain a valid North Carolina Pesticide Applicator’s License.
• Must hold a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

 

Education/Certification/Training

• High School diploma required; Bachelor’s degree preferred with relevant plant or greenhouse experience.
• Minimum of 2-3 years of greenhouse, plant propagation, or related agricultural experience.

 

Pay Rate

• $25 per hour
