Job Description About the Role Reports to the area Head Gardener, Curator, or the Horticultural Superintendent, performing duties to maintain assigned garden areas.
Essential Duties - Maintains garden area on a daily basis through weeding, watering, edging, grooming, and removal of debris, and small adjustments in irrigation.
- Under direct supervision, performs pruning, planting, transplanting, clearing, fertilizing, and weed control.
- Will be asked to perform duties in other areas of the Public Gardens at the Huntington as needed.
- Adheres to written safety policy, follows all precautions and directions in use of equipment and chemicals.
- Coordinate, communicate and supervise the many volunteers in their specific tasks.
- Maintain certification to allow the spraying of the garden and maintain all equipment as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Candidate Requirements and Experience Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must have knowledge of grounds maintenance, such as general cultivation requirements of plants; should possess basic pruning and planting skills; must be able to perform weeding; and have basic irrigation knowledge.
- Must be detail oriented, selective pruning experience preferable.
- Must be in good physical condition in order to stoop, bend, walk long distances and lift moderate (and occasionally heavy) loads.
- Must be competent in the proper use of hand tools, blowers, edgers and other powered equipment as required.
Experience:
- Garden maintenance experience required and/or
- Course work in horticulture helpful, or taking college level horticulture classes toward a Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture.
- Strong and demonstrated interest in gardening and horticulture and knowledge of general cultivation of plants, watering, pruning, planting, and soil health.
- Attention to detail in the garden.
- Must be detail oriented, selective pruning experience preferable.
- Must work well independently and collaboratively.
- Must be competent in the proper use of hand tools, blowers, edgers and other powered equipment as required.
Preferred:
- A good understanding of English is preferred.
- Associate's Degree or higher preferred.
Working Conditions - Works outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Will stoop, bend, walk long distances and lift moderate (and occasionally heavy) loads.
