Position Summary
Washington University seeks an advancement professional for the position of Director of Stewardship. University Advancement strives to advance the mission of the school by creating a culture of philanthropy among alumni, students, faculty, and friends.


This position requires a deep understanding of donor engagement strategies, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to drive philanthropic support by ensuring exemplary stewardship practices. The Director of Stewardship plays a critical role in maximizing donor retention, increasing donor satisfaction, and fostering long-term donor engagement.

Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Scholarship Matching and Student Profiles
  • Facilitate MGO, donor, and student interactions (individual and event-based).
  • Develop student profiles.
  • Develop donor profiles.
  • Support By Name and By Story type events.
  • Assist school with ARCH-related data needs.
  • Identify students to feature for speaking engagements, videos, compelling stories, etc.
  • Work with Donor Relations team on centralized matching.
Bespoke Stewardship Projects
  • Maintain knowledge of professorships for the school and provide information for installations & lectures.
  • Support stewardship programming.
  • Targeted donor messaging and special reports.
  • Support memorials and other special events.
Acknowledgments (School and Dean)
  • High-level acknowledgment work (e.g., Handwritten notes from the dean/ program leader).
  • Support Dean's office information needs (ARCH data pulls).
Impact reports
  • Liaison with donor relations and principal gifts to gather key information for high-level impact reports.
  • Develop support materials and collate information for the donor relations team.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree.
  • Four years of fundraising experience with a track record of successful solicitations or related experience.
  • Project leadership skills, with value placed on organizational loyalty, commitment, pride, integrity, mutual respect, and collegial openness.
  • Development experience in a complex university environment.
  • Honesty, integrity, and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to think strategically and analytically, and then implement effectively.
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining donor confidentiality and building trust with donors.
  • Deep appreciation for and the ability to articulate the mission and aspirations of the Washington University.
  • Desire to play a meaningful role in the University community and to share in its commitment to research and education.
  • Capacity to listen carefully, learn quickly, and work effectively.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Six years of related experience.

Salary Range
$84,200.00 - $148,500.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
