REPORTS TO: General Counsel

S TATUS: Full-time, Exempt

RANGE: $95,000 $120,000

Founded in 1901, Brooklyn Law School is a distinguished, independent law school located in Downtown Brooklyn, New York. The Law School is searching for a Director of Equal Opportunity and Title IX Coordinator to join our team. Reporting to the General Counsel, the Director of Equal Opportunity and Title IX Coordinator will investigate complaints of discrimination and harassment, advise on compliance relating to non-discrimination law and institutional policy, administer student and employee accommodations, and provide training to students, faculty and staff on issues of diversity, equal opportunity, and non-discrimination. The Director of Equal Opportunity and Title IX Coordinator will serve as the Law Schools Title IX Coordinator and Section 504/ADA Coordinator.

Brooklyn Law School seeks an experienced and dedicated professional to serve as its Director of Equal Opportunity and Title IX Coordinator. The ideal candidate will have experience in civil rights investigations and/or disability accommodations; an interest in working in higher education; a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity; and will be passionate about supporting the Law Schools mission and its students.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating the Law Schools compliance with applicable equal opportunity and non-discrimination laws, including the administration of required employee and student training
  • Conducting internal investigations pursuant to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972; Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973; the Age Discrimination and Employment Act; the New York Human Rights Law; the New York City Human Rights Law; harassment and retaliation claims; and claims arising under Law School policy. This includes meeting with complainant and respondents, advising them of their rights under the applicable law or policy, conducting prompt, impartial, and thorough investigations, and drafting detailed and unbiased investigation reports.
  • Serving as the Law Schools Title IX Coordinator and Section 504/ADA Coordinator
  • Administering disability, pregnancy, and religious accommodations for students and employees
  • Directing climate surveys and other forms of assessment to promote continuous improvement of campus climate
  • Cooperating with Public Safety with respect to concurrent investigations and reporting requirements

Required:

  • A Bachelors degree and eight years experience in a related field. For purposes of this requirement, years of study in pursuit of an advanced degree in a related field will be considered years of experience.
  • Knowledge of applicable civil rights laws, regulations, and administrative guidance
  • Excellent judgement, analytical and oral/written communication skills
  • Critical thinking skills, including an ability to solve difficult problems and balance competing interests
  • Effective conflict resolution skills and an ability to maintain neutrality
  • Emotional intelligence and an ability to listen carefully and react with sensitivity and compassion
  • Ability to manage highly sensitive and confidential information

Preferred:

  • A Juris Doctor, Masters Degree, or other advanced degree in a related field
  • Experience conducting civil rights investigations
  • Experience administering reasonable accommodations

Work environment

  • The role requires regular interaction with students, faculty, staff, and other administrative departments, fostering a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere.
  • The work will primarily be conducted in an office setting with occasional responsibilities in other areas of the campus, such as student residences, event spaces, and meeting rooms.

Remote capabilities

  • The Director of Equal Opportunity and Title IX Coordinator position is a student facing role which requires presence on campus, in person a minimum of four (4) days per week.
  • Remote work may be available one (1) day per week, pursuant to an approved hybrid work agreement, and keeping in mind that the essential functions of role require in person presence on campus.
