Job Description

We are recruiting for a Full-time Temporary vacancy due to a military leave of absence, length of employment is to be determined at a later date but could be up to 12 months. Responsibilities Supervise inmates in daily routines and monitor their care and control. Initiate feeding of inmates, supervise housekeeping and sanitation issues, distribute and retrieve meal trays and inventory all utensils. Count and dispense medications as prescribed by physicians. Interact with inmates, respond to their concerns, deescalate stressful and dangerous conflicts. Conduct routine inspections for hazards, contraband and tampering. Make frequent checks on inmates under watch or special precautions. Maintain shift logs and reports as required. Conduct detailed inspections of jail, incoming and outgoing mail and inmate personal property for contraband. Maintain control of all security keys. Perform intake responsibilities including creating inmate files, fingerprinting, photographing, arranging interpreters, recording belongings, conducting orientation, classifying inmates, medical questionnaires and gathering documents. Prepare incident reports and maintain jail records and logs in accordance with department procedures. Represent inmates with Inmate Grievance Procedures. Supervise and monitor family visitors, maintenance and repair staff, attorneys, clergy, volunteers, nursing and other persons within the jail. Transport inmates to court, doctor appointments and other facilities. Provide credible, accurate and effective testimony in court and elsewhere by conducting themselves in a manner that does not cause concern regarding their ability to provide testimony. Perform other duties of a comparable level or type as required. Serve as a backup to dispatchers and perform communication functions as needed. Enter initial complaint information on all received calls. Dispatch personnel and gather information, forwarding all pertinent details to field units or other appropriate personnel. Respond to requests for patrol units. Verify that dispatched information is acknowledged and document the response. Input information and respond to inquiries through NCIC system. Maintain activity logs and computerized records. Attend ongoing training in accordance with department requirements. Qualifications High School Diploma or GED. No previous experience required; significant on-the-job training will be provided after hire. Valid Minnesota Driver’s License. After hire, incumbents will be required to obtain First Aid and CPR certification, and restraint training. Incumbents who back up dispatch will be required to obtain BCA certification in the use of systems. Completion of supplemental questions is required. Skills and Knowledge Knowledge of observational techniques to identify potential drug withdrawal, diabetic reactions, suicidal thoughts and psychological symptoms. Knowledge of jail rules, policies and procedures pertaining to job assignments. Basic understanding of the criminal justice system, probation and law enforcement. Basic first aid and CPR training. Applicable federal, state and local laws relevant to job functions and duties. Basic recordkeeping and use of computers. Applying, interpreting and handling jail principles, practices and procedures to solve problems. Communication, customer/client relations, interpersonal skills applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the public and controlling, monitoring and supervising inmate movements and activities. Make appropriate decisions under stressful situations in accordance with established departmental procedures, routines and processes. Preparing and presenting numerical and narrative reports. Using computers and learning department specific software applications. Deescalating procedures and techniques. Learning and applying self‑defense techniques and defending self and others in physical encounters. Following, applying and carrying out assignments in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations. Judgment and discretion in dealing with inmates appropriately and addressing conflicts. Supervising and controlling the movements of inmates within the facility. Learning, monitoring and responding to security systems, alarms and cameras. Enforcing policies and procedures. Ensuring security and safety of inmates and staff. Physical Requirements Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 25 pounds frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body, and to constantly lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects in the performance of the job. Incumbents may be exposed to personal injury, physical violence, verbal abuse, fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation, blood, bodily fluids, workspace restrictions, intense noise, contagious diseases and occasional travel.
