This position reports to and receives operational coordination from the manager of Language Services .This position provides accurate and complete, interpretation of medical information between providers and patients. Candidates adhere to the standards of practice and code of ethics of medical Interpreting.

Responsibilities
* 1. Facilitates and encourages direct communication between patient and provider by being a conduit and not the focus of communication.
* 1.1 Displays equal sensitivity to patient and caregiver concerns, interpreting all comments between the two parties
* 2. Participates in on-going professional development.
* 2.1 Participates in on-going professional development by attending interpreter conferences, training offered by the department , extended education opportunities and by reading professional articles or taking language improvement courses
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Associate degree required. Bachelor degree with a concentration in language, communication, hospitality/customer service, business or an allied medical field preferred.
EXPERIENCE
Minimum of one year of medical interpreting required. Experience in a healthcare/hospital setting preferred. Experience in handling a variety of customers at all socio-economic levels. Experience and ability to enter and retrieve data from EMR systems, i.e. Epic, Meditech etc.
LICENSURE
National certification required for Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, Arabic, Vietnamese and Korean. Not required for other languages.
SPECIAL SKILLS
Must be fluent in a foreign language and in English, both verbal and written. Proven ability to work as a part of a team and to work with limited supervision. Completes the accurate entry of data in both Epic and the Language Services System. Substantial knowledge of medical vocabulary in at least two languages.
PHYSICAL DEMAND
Hearing sufficient to understand and interface effectively between two or more parties in a medical interview who speak different spoken languages. Sitting 10-20% of the day, Standing or ambulating 80% of the day, able to move quickly through a large multi-floored complex with many buildings. Visual acuity sufficient to read printed matter. Interpreter will be required to be flexible with start and end times of shift. May be required travel to different YNHH facilities to include satellite offices.
