Job Description

The Peer Specialist has the responsibility of emphasizing the acquisition, development, and expansion of recovery skills to enable individuals to fully engage in their recovery journey. The interventions they provide are based on the therapeutic relationship they build with the individual and their family. As part of the team, the Peer Specialist helps clients develop essential skills, access recovery tools and community support, and motivates them to achieve and maintain recovery. The Certified Peer Specialist position offers mileage reimbursement, employee assistance program with 24/7 counseling services, legal assistance, and financial consultation for employees and their households at no cost. Key responsibilities include collaborating with individuals to develop personalized treatment plans, maintaining communication with referral sources and guardians, participating in meetings for continuity of care, assisting in researching and referring individuals to outside resources, scheduling treatment appointments and providing transportation, accompanying clients to appointments, supporting clients in accessing medical services and documenting services per state and CARF standards, offering crisis intervention and facilitating group education sessions, pursuing professional development through training, utilizing peer support to foster recovery and resilience, helping individuals build community connections and access information and support for mental health and substance use disorders, supporting independent choices and treatment engagement, assisting in setting and achieving recovery goals, providing emotional and instructional support, encouraging healthy and sober lifestyles, aiding in creating personal treatment plans, adhering to ethical and confidentiality standards, and showing interest in company goals. Knowledge and skills required include personal recovery experience, ability to share recovery skills, serve as a source of hope, knowledge of case management and rehabilitation methods, familiarity with legal requirements and court procedures, communication skills, ability to connect clients to recovery resources, and general computer knowledge. Experience and education requirements include self-identification as a present or former client or person in recovery, one year of direct experience with the mental health system, completion of state-approved Certified Peer Support training within six months, and specific state requirements for Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas. Employment requirements include successful background checks, new hire orientation, training completion, valid driver's license and insurance, minimum age of 21, and at least one year of recovery. Physical requirements include light work with some walking, standing, sitting, pushing, and pulling.
