Job Description
The mission of Exercise Science, Physical Education and Recreation is to prepare students for professional positions and leadership roles in Exercise Science, Physical Education, Strength and Conditioning, and Recreation through experiential educational opportunities that promote healthy lifestyles. Graduates earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science, Physical Education, and Recreation (EXPER).
The BS in Exercise Science, Physical Education, and Recreation (EXPER) program currently includes four emphases of study:
- General Exercise Science
- Physical Education K-12 Teacher Preparation
- Recreation
- Strength and Conditioning
Responsibilities of this tenure-track, nine-month generalist position include teaching and mentoring undergraduate students in Exercise Science and contributing to program curricular needs. The teaching expectation is 24 hours per academic year and possible courses include but are not limited to: Intro to EXPER; Advanced Weight Training; Personal Health and Lab; Functional Training; Exercise Assessment and Prescription; Fitness Technology; and Research and Statistics. This position will maintain a program of scholarly activity; and will fulfill basic service duties to program, college, university and/or profession. Scholarship is broadly defined to include mentoring undergraduate research projects; research, presentations, and publications; professional consulting; interdisciplinary research collaborations; use of research in curriculum development; applying for or reviewing grants. Applicants must be committed to all aspects of diversity in learning, discovery, and engagement and to contributing to the success of EXPER programing through frequent positive collaboration with faculty colleagues, service to industry and/or profession, and dissemination of scholarly works.
Primary Duties
Teach baccalaureate and possibly graduate level courses in the Exercise Science program in accordance with program needs. This includes preparing and presenting course materials according to department curricular needs; administering appropriate evaluation of student performance; selecting and ordering texts; preparing, administering, and grading assignments; and assigning final grades. It will also include proposing curriculum changes and program modifications to the appropriate Department Chair/Coordinator and meeting with students during office hours concerning course assistance or concerns.
Conduct and engage in scholarly activity such as professional research, presentations, publications, grant writing, reviewing journals or textbooks, attending conferences, providing leadership on research projects etc.
Conduct student advising/mentoring to ensure appropriate course and field work is completed to accomplish program objectives. This requires the faculty member to establish, post, and communicate to students at least five regularly scheduled office hours each week and more during registration periods (part of the office hours will be spent supporting teaching).
Participate in service to the university and profession: participate in committees, campus meetings, University functions, graduation, professional service work.
Ancillary Duties Participate in recruitment or retention activities, program review, assessment, strategic planning or other assistance to the school as needed, and other duties as assigned.
Salary Range $61,000 - $63,000
Minimum Qualifications - Master degree in Exercise Science, Human Performance or closely related field and significant progress toward a Doctorate degree with coursework completed by August 2025 and degree completion by August 2026.
- Experience with and commitment to working with diverse student populations and commitment to equity and inclusion in education at all levels.
- Evidence of successful experience in college teaching.

- Strong collegial and collaborative skills.
- Willingness to teach a broad range of courses (from introductory to graduate level)
- Evidence of Scholarly Work.
- Prior professional background in related non-academic positions such as coaching, strength and conditioning, and/or personal training.
- Experience and/or commitment to the use of technology as an instructional tool including teaching online or hybrid courses.
