Job Description

We are a privately held real estate development firm with a growing portfolio of multifamily and mixed-income housing projects, committed to expanding affordable housing access in underserved communities.

We are seeking a strategic and detail-oriented Affordable Housing Attorney to support the acquisition, development, and compliance processes for affordable housing projects. This role will be responsible for identifying and evaluating affordable housing opportunities, managing legal filings and regulatory procedures, and ensuring all transactions align with federal, state, and local housing program requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proactively source, evaluate, and advise on affordable housing real estate opportunities.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, including purchase and sale agreements, loan documents, regulatory agreements, and partnership agreements.
  • File and manage all applications, filings, and compliance documentation required for affordable housing projects, including but not limited to Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) applications, Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) agreements, and municipal funding sources.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with affordable housing program regulations at the federal, state, and local levels.
  • Liaise with government agencies, municipal officials, and housing authorities to facilitate approvals and maintain relationships.
  • Provide legal support during due diligence, closings, and post-closing phases.
  • Collaborate with internal teams including acquisitions, finance, construction, and asset management to align legal strategy with business goals.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and advise leadership on implications for current and future affordable housing strategies.

Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • 5+ years of legal experience in real estate law with a strong focus on affordable housing transactions.
  • Deep understanding of affordable housing programs such as Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD), Section 8, HOME, Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), and other public financing tools.
  • Proven experience working with municipalities, housing agencies, and public-private partnerships.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • High attention to detail, with a proactive and solutions-oriented mindset
